Kolkata?s main railway station is actually the Howrah Station. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India and has trains running to all parts of the country. Sealdah Station, the other important station is also well connected to important places in India and West Bengal.

Kolkata is connected to most cities in India cities by road. The main bus terminus of the city is at Esplanade, in the heart of the city. A new air-conditioned bus service connecting Kolkata with Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh was launched recently. |

| Kolkata, the capital of the eastern state of West Bengal formerly was also the capital of India till 1911. Formerly known as Calcutta, the city is located on the banks of the River Hooghly and has a subtropical climate. The twin city of Howrah lies on the other side of the river and is connected to Kolkata by the legendary Howrah Bridge and the Vidyasagar Setu. Kolkata is often referred to as the Cultural Capital of India and the City of Joy. A city of luminaries, Kolkata has been the home to several prominent figures in India?s history, namely Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa and Satyajit Ray.

Built in 1874, the India Museum is oldest museum in India. It possesses an extremely rare collection of archeological artifacts. At the entrance to the museum is an original Lion Capitol, the national symbol of India. The museum is open between 10am and 5pm on all days of the week except Monday.

Visiting the Birla Planetarium can be an educational and entertaining experience and is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Shows are held in English, Hindi and Bengali.
