By Road Ahmedabad has a good network of National and State Highways. The State Transport Corporation runs services to all major cities and towns in Gujarat as well as to other states.

Ahmedabad is the largest city in the western state of Gujarat and is also referred to by its old name of Karnavati. The city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district and was also the state capital from 1960-1970, when it was replaced by Gandhinagar.

Sabarmati Ashram Seven kilometres from the city centre, on the west bank of the Sabarmati River lies Sabarmati Ashram ? Mahatma Gandhi headquarters during the Indian freedom struggle. The ashram was founded in 1915 and still produces handicrafts, handmade paper and spinning wheels. The Mahatma?s living quarters are preserved as a small museum and there is a pictorial record of the important events of his life.
Ahmed Shah?s Mosque Dating back to 1414, it is one of the oldest mosques of the region. It was built on the site of a Hindu temple using parts of the temple for its construction. The front of the mosque is now a garden.
Akshardham Akshardham is a unique cultural complex in memory of Lord Swaminarayan. Located in Gandhinagar, it is a majestic monument built completely from pink sandstone, without the use of any steel. Its showpiece attraction is a 7 foot gold leaf idol of Lord Swaminarayan and his holy relics.
